How To Keep Your Vizsla Puppy Busy
How to keep your Vizsla busy while you are away

Long ago, most dogs had jobs to do during the day. Whether they were herding sheep or hunting prey, they were kept busy. In today’s society, dogs are our beloved pets and kept at home while their humans are at work. A dog’s instincts, however, require that they have dog-friendly activities available or they can become destructive to the home, chewing on shoes and furniture, digging holes in the yard or barking at everything, and your wonderful little Vizsla is no exception. Providing activities to keep your dog occupied while you are away prevents boredom and destructive behavior.
The Vizsla breed was originally bred to be a hunter as well as a companion to its owner. Its natural instincts are to hunt and gather and that instinct is what makes it somewhat of a rambunctious and curious one.
When you are away from home, confine your dog to a cage or pen. Place a comfortable dog bed in the crate. In your dog’s mind, the cage or pen is its den so providing a secure place to hide and rest when its human isn’t home will comfort them. Provide hard-rubber bones for chewing. Your dog can gnaw for hours on rubber bones. If you give your dog bones and toys for chewing this can prevent self-destructive chewing on its feet and skin.
Since the Vizsla breed has a natural hunting instinct, they can sniff out hidden treats that will satisfy their primeval urge and help prevent digging in your sofa or kitchen trash can. Hide a hollow dog toy filled with dog food in its crate. You can also supply your dog with a puzzle box made just for dogs. You can hide their favorite treat inside the rubber box. They will search until they locate the treat which will keep them occupied for hours.
While you are away, Vizsla tends to feel lonely. They only want your love so it might be a good idea to place a sturdy stuffed toy in their crate. They may play with it, throw it in the air and chase it or simply cuddle with it for companionship. Vizslas need love and while you can’t be there to love on them, a nice fluffy toy just might do the trick.
Vizsla by nature do not like to be left alone. If you can’t be there all the time, hire a dog walker to walk your dog once or twice a day. A short walk around the block breaks up the dog’s day and gives them a chance to relieve themselves and stretch their legs. You also may want to consider adding a second pet to your household. Vizslas respond well to other animals so you may want to add a cat to the mix. A cat adds companionship without arousing a dog’s territorial instincts.
If you have a Vizsla dog and it isn’t possible to be home with it all day long, the above suggestions can definitely alleviate some of the angst this breed faces when left alone.
