Training Your Weimaraner or Vizsla Puppy To Be Alone

Training your Weimaraner or Vizsla to be alone:

Your puppy is used to being part of a pack from the moment they are born. Being alone means being at a higher risk of being pray to a predator, so when you think of your Weimaraner or Vizsla, it is understandable that isolation would bring on anxiety. As a puppy they are part of a pack and when you go home it takes awhile for your puppy to get used to their role within their new family (pack).
Because of our hectic lives and the fact that most of us have jobs that require us to leave our home and go to work that means our Weimaraners or Vizslas puppy need to spend time home alone, it is important to train your puppy at a very early stage so they understand this is part of their daily life.

It is very important to socialize your new White River Kennels Weimaraner or Vizsla puppy. Your new Weimaraner or Vizsla puppy needs to be socialized with both other dogs and other people. It is just as important to train your puppy to have time alone. When training your puppy for alone time start in smaller stages. 1) Start by putting the puppy in the crate and having the puppy in the same room as you. Feeding your puppy in the crate is a great way to start out. Feed 3 times daily in the crate. Also have water available in the crate for your puppy. 2) The next step would be to put the puppy in the crate while you are in the room cleaning / or doing other things. But still where the puppy sees you. If the puppy cries allow the puppy to do so.  3) The next stage is to put the puppy in the crate and  leave the room. If your puppy barks or cries out let them do so for a little while. Once the puppy gets used to being alone some they will stop over reacting to being alone. 4)Leave your puppy for a short time period in the crate and leave your home. Generally 1-2 hour increments to start and get longer overtime. Make sure your Weimaraner or Vizsla puppy from White River Kennels gets plenty of exercise and that that your Weimaraner or Vizsla puppy has chew toys and/or other toys to occupy their time. Keep in mind the crate is a great training tool for your puppy to learn potty training and keeping your puppy safe.  When you get back home reward and praise your puppy from White River Kennels for being calm. Before you go back to work make sure you have a schedule made for someone to come and let your puppy go out and potty or be walked. Congratulations, you have just crate trained your puppy and prevented your puppy from having separation anxiety issues. Do not just use the crate when leaving the home, also use the crate for food and water as well. Never use the crate as a punishment for bad behavior.
