There are tips, however, for you to follow in order to get your house puppy-friendly ready before your bring your new pup to his forever home.
Whether you are experienced with pets or are adopting for the first time, here are some helpful tips to help with your active puppy!
Preparing your house
Before your puppy comes home, you want to “baby-proof” your home. Just like toddlers, puppies can get into anything so it is important to provide a safe and comfortable environment for them. Remove poisonous plants and toxins, purchase electrical cord protectors and remove anything they can possibly chew on and/or choke on. Make sure you have plenty of safe chew toys around so that they don’t destroy the things they shouldn’t.
Socialize with your puppy
Socialization only happens after your Veterinarian says they are ready. When they are, introduce your puppy to new places, people and things early. This makes it easier to socialize them. If you wait longer than 12 weeks to do so, you may have a difficult time getting them to socialize. Locate dog parts or arrange puppy play dates before your pup comes home so that you are ready to get them active.
Lots of exercise
Weimaraner and Vizsla puppies need regular exercise. They are very active breeds and puppies, in general, are little bundles of energy from the start. Making sure they get the right amount of exercise is important to their overall health. Learn walking routes in your neighborhood so that you know where to go before they come home.
Housetraining
Housebreaking your puppy can be a time-consuming process but it is important to your puppy’s growth. Puppies should be taken out every two hours up to six times a day. If you can’t take them out that often you need to crate train your pup or limit their roaming access by gating them into a small space. Most dogs don’t go where they sleep. Figure this process out before they come home so that you have a system in place rather than trying to figure it out as you go.
Obedient behavior
While the benefits of having a new puppy far outweigh the negatives, no puppy is perfect and accidents will happen. In order to help your pup quickly learn the rules of behavior, attempt to teach them skills such as sitting for a treat or coming when called. Obedience training is crucial at the early stages. Being consistent with your obedience training is key.
