They make fantastic, loyal family pets. The Vizsla is a dog breed that originated in Hungary. The Hungarian or Magyar vizslas are sporting dogs and loyal companions. In addition to being the smallest of the all-round -retriever breeds. The Vizsla’s medium size is one of the breed’s most appealing characteristics as a hunter of fowl and upland game. Athletes of many talents, Vizslas, excel at various sports and activities. They are eager and graceful trotters of great stamina, making them ideal for jogging or biking companions. Most Vizslas are good eaters, and the majority do well on any high-quality brand of dry dog food. Some owners choose to prepare their own cooked or raw diet, following specific nutritional instructions from recognized experts. To add variety, many owners supplement kibble with small amounts of leftovers from their meals (avoiding onions, raisins, grapes, chocolate, and other foods that are not healthy for dogs). Owners need to watch out for overfeeding and resulting weight gain. There is considerable variation in individual dogs’ caloric needs; a young, active dog may require four or five cups each day of high-calorie food, while older or less active dogs may need less than half that quantity. The AKC Standard calls the Vizsla “lively, gentle-mannered, demonstrably affectionate, and sensitive. “The good-natured Vizsla has also been called a “Velcro” dog because he is so tactile — he likes to attach himself to people.
Most Vizslas get along well with everyone, including strangers and other animals, but they do need a lot of early socialization to build confidence. Some Vizslas are excitable and easily startled in new situations. The Vizsla has the independent spirit of all pointing breeds, but responds to training more willingly than most and is a capable performer in advanced obedience competition. You may need to control its tendency to mouth your hands — provide a box filled with toys so it can carry things around in its mouth. The average Lifespan: 9 to 12 years on average.
