Whether you are experienced with pets or adopting for the first time, here are some helpful tips to help with your active puppy!
Prepare your home
Before your puppy comes home, you want to “baby-proof” your home. Puppies can get into anything so it is important to provide a safe and comfortable environment for them. Remove poisonous plants and toxins, purchase electrical cord protectors and remove anything they can possibly chew on. Make sure you have plenty of safe chew toys around so that he/she doesn’t destroy things they shouldn’t.
Socialize your puppy
Socialization only happen after their Veterinarian states they are ready. When they are ready, introducing your puppy to new places, people, and things early make it easier to socialize them. If you wait longer than 12 weeks to do so, you may have a difficult time getting him/her to socialize. Locate dog parks or puppy play dates before your pup comes home so that you are ready to get him/her active.
Exercise
Weimaraner and Vizsla puppies need regular exercise. They are very active dogs and puppies are little bundles of energy right from the start. Making sure they get the right amount of exercise is important to their overall health. Learn walking routes in your neighborhood so that you know where to go before the pup comes home.
Housebreaking
Housebreaking your puppy can be a time-consuming process but it is important to your puppy’s growth. Puppies should be taken out every two hours up to six times a day. If you can’t take them out that often you need to crate train your pup or limit their roaming access by gating them into a small space. Most dogs don’t go where they sleep. Figure this process out before your pup comes home so that you already have a system in place rather than trying to figure it out as you go.
Obedience
While the benefits of getting a new puppy far outweigh the negatives, no puppy is perfect and accidents will happen. In order to help your pup quickly learn the rules of behavior, attempt to teach him or her skills such as sitting for a treat or coming when called. Obedience training is crucial at the early stages. Being consistent with your obedience training is key.
